The inclusion of nutrition curriculum in medical education has been extensively researched and has been determined to be lacking. This lack of training leads to a knowledge deficit for medical providers and thus decreased self-confidence in their ability to deliver high quality nutrition education to patients in need. This is concerning for patients since diet plays a role in the development of many chronic diseases including those associated with obesity. This presentation will help to close this gap in the area of weight loss counseling in the clinic setting.

What you’ll learn:

Session One:
How to Counsel Your Patients on Weight Loss
This presentation will provide learners with current recommendations regarding weight loss as well as strategies to elicit behavior change in the clinic setting. Lifestyle modifications as well as basic pharmacotherapy will be discussed. Additionally, learners will be introduced to counseling techniques that can be utilized with patients.
List members of the weight loss team
Explain current weight loss diet recommendations
List lifestyle modifications for weight loss
Review basic pharmacotherapy for weight loss
Describe the Stages of Change model
Describe a SMART goal
Explain the 5 A’s framework
Discuss techniques in motivational interviewing

Session Two:
Overview of Nutrition Guidelines for Chronic Disease States
This presentation will provide learners with current nutrition recommendations as they pertain to chronic disease states. The discussion will include (but isn’t limited to) recommendations for cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and various cancers. Additionally, strategies will be provided to help clinicians discuss these recommendations with patients in the clinic setting.
Demonstrate understanding of nutrition recommendations for a variety of chronic disease states including cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and various cancers
Discuss techniques in motivational interviewing
Describe indications for referral to a nutrition professional
